This bronze came into being through the generosity of a friend of mine
who, on a visit one evening, asked how my bronzes were made. I dusted
off and brought out a favorite wax of a galloping mare I had created
years previously, then added a wax of another mare alongside to show
her how they could be cast as a pair. I have always loved sketching imaginary
horses wild as nature made them, racing free with long manes and tails
whipping in the wind. Joanne told me she wanted to have them cast in
bronze as a surprise birthday gift for her husband (although I believe
she wanted the bronze for herself as well). Joanne went through the whole
foundry process with me and for a couple of months we had quite a time
keeping the secret from inadvertently slipping out in casual conversation
with her husband. But we pulled it off and thus Fire on the Wind was
born.
